The Three Main Types of Rocks

Most rocks fit into three main groups.

Do not worry about memorizing everything right now. We will go deeper into each one later.

For now, just remember these three:

1. Igneous Rocks

Igneous rocks come from melted rock.

When melted rock cools and hardens, it becomes igneous rock.

Lava from a volcano can cool and turn into rock. Melted rock underground can also cool slowly and become rock.

Examples of igneous rocks include basalt, granite, obsidian, and pumice.

Simple idea:

Igneous rock = rock made from melted rock.

2. Sedimentary Rocks

Sedimentary rocks are made from layers.

Tiny pieces of rock, sand, mud, shells, or minerals pile up over time. Those layers get pressed together and become rock.

3. Metamorphic Rocks
